My article in the Winter 2020 issue of With Equal Right described the formation of the MWL Foundation, how the Foundation supports MWL, and why it is so important for you to support the Foundation. My goal with that article was to familiarize you – our members and MWL supporters – on what exactly the Foundation is, and how vital it is to MWL’s short- and long-term success.

Since writing that article, and despite the COVID-19 pandemic, our Foundation board members have continued to increase understanding and awareness of the Foundation, develop and organize fundraising events and projects, and strategize ways to expand our fundraising capacity through donors/grants, annual giving, and major gifts. Here are just some of the things that the Foundation has been doing in the past few months:

New Tag Line and Case Statement

To better clarify and communicate the Foundation’s role and relationship to MWL, our Marketing and Communications working group devised a “tag line” and a “case statement” for the Foundation. After several sessions brainstorming, reworking and editing ideas, we settled on what we hope is a simple and straightforward explanation of the Foundation’s functions:

Tag-Line: “Funding MWL’s Future”

Case Statement: “MWL Foundation is the philanthropic partner of MWL that fuels scholarships, mentorships, CLEs, and other projects and programing that advance women in the law.”

We will be incorporating the tag line into a new Foundation logo. Both the tag line and the case statement will be included in Foundation pages of the MWL website, publications, and other communication literature/media.

Financial Support to MWL

The Foundation’s board recently disbursed $6,000 to MWL for staffing expenses and another $6,000 grant to MWL to help fund its charitable activities.

For the past few years, the Foundation has been contributing $6,000 to MWL pursuant to a Service Agreement. The purpose for this expenditure is to help subsidize some of MWL’s staffing expenses, given staff’s labors on behalf of the Foundation. It is the Foundation’s hope that with further contributions and more financial stability, we will be able to increase the annual allotment to MWL for staffing expenses.

The MWL Foundation was created to support and fund MWL activities that are considered “charitable activities” under its creation as a 501(c)(3) organization. Procedurally, this means that every year MWL submits a grant application to the Foundation, requesting funds for projects and initiatives that fall under the “charitable activities” umbrella. As in previous years, MWL applied for, and the Foundation granted, $6,000 to MWL. Like the expenditure for staffing expenses, the Foundation hopes to increase this grant allocation in the future.

Grant from Fredrikson & Byron

The Foundation was pleased to receive a generous $2,000 grant from the Fredrickson & Byron’s Foundation.  The Fredrikson & Byron Foundation focuses its grant-making in areas where it can “make a difference,” giving priority to grant requests from organizations where its attorneys are members and personally involved. We are so fortunate to have many of our members and leaders from Fredrickson & Byron. We thank the firm’s Foundation for its contribution.

Our Corporate, Firm and Foundation Relations working group continues to research and identify legal and greater-community grant opportunities, as well as identify and develop law firm and corporate support for the Foundation. If your firm, foundation or business is interested in contributing to the Foundation, we would love to hear from you.

Addressing Future Plans in times of COVID-19

In this time of COVID-19 – with no firm grasp of what the future holds – the MWL Foundation (like everyone) has had to consider whether and in what manner we will continue or modify our fundraising strategies. For example, we are hopeful that the Rosalie Wahl lecture will still take place this fall, and we can replicate the success of last year’s Live Auction and Direct Appeal, but at the same time we are studying other options should the event be cancelled or presented in another format. This will be an ongoing assessment. At this time, our Annual Giving working group continues to lead and facilitate the Live Auction and Direct Appeal (in whatever iteration it ends up being), and to organize an annual appeal.

Finally, our Major Gifts working group continues to identify and cultivate major donor prospects, as well as further implement and market the Foundation’s planned giving/endowment opportunities.

Thank you to Board Members!

As I near the end of my term, I want to publicly acknowledge the amazing women on our board.  They are a perfect combination of smarts, experience, and determination.  Quite simply, they are the ideal board: they show up, bring their ideas, collaborate with others, volunteer to do more work, and then accomplish what they said they’d do. And they are a lot of fun to boot! I am so grateful I had the opportunity to work with these fine women. Thank you for a wonderful year.
