2015-2018 Strategic Plan

MWL Welcomes Your Comments

From the President

By: Kendra Brodin

hover textIf you took a look at my column in the last issue of With Equal Right, I described my “big tent” theme for the 2017-2018 year. My goal in the coming year is to underscore the fact that Minnesota Woman Lawyers’ membership is made up of a deeply diverse and interesting group of women. MWL truly is a “big tent” under which all are welcome.

Another way to think about the “big tent” is to envision there being something for everyone within MWL. Whatever your goals are with MWL membership, you can accomplish them. This issue of With Equal Right is about making the most of your membership, and I invite you to take a look at all of the amazing opportunities for involvement with MWL...

MWL Meetings: A Safe and Supportive Space for Enhancing and Developing Leadership

By: Veena Iyer

hover textI became a member of MWL about eight years ago when I first moved to Minnesota.  I threw myself into the Community Action Committee and eventually became a co-chair and a member of the MWL Board of Directors.  I’ve also served on a number of taskforces on the creation of the foundation, the strategic plan, and endorsements. In these capacities, I’ve attended many a meeting, both as a participant and as a facilitator, and I’ve developed the following set of principles for getting the most out of a meeting...

Why MWL and Your Employer are a Value-Added Partnership

By: Jennifer Wichelman

hover textDuring a recent meeting of the MWL Partner Leadership Counsel, someone asked “How do you convince your employer that joining MWL is a worthwhile investment of their money?” At first blush, the question surprised me. I thought it should be obvious why supporting MWL is a good thing. The fact is, however, that whether you work for a private firm, the government, or in-house at a corporation, employers are constantly asked to approve requests from their employees to join legal organizations and pay their corresponding membership dues.  Practically speaking, there are only so many funds to go around. So why is membership in MWL money well spent?...

A Solo-Practitioner's Guide to MWL

By: Mary Szondy

hover textI never planned on being a solo practitioner.  As a former social worker with eight years of experience working with persons with disabilities, I entered law school with the hope of working for Legal Aid or the Disability Law Center. But as a member of the first graduating class of the fourth law school in Minnesota, finding a job was tough. I ended up being hired by another solo, only to be laid off when I was three months pregnant with my daughter. I hung my shingle to buy myself some time.

More than twelve years later, I'm still here...

An Initiatives Update from the MWL Equity Committee

By: Contributors from the MWL Equity Committee

Joining a committee is an excellent way to gain more meaningfully involvement with an organization, give back to the community, and meet new people. The Minnesota Women Lawyers (“MWL”) Equity Committee is no exception. Each year, the Equity Committee identifies a number of causes it hopes to further, in order to advance the MWL mission and move the legal profession forward. These projects aim to promote equality and diversity in the State of Minnesota, and to provide various leadership opportunities to women attorneys, whether they are MWL members or not. Each project is led by at least one Co-Chair of the Committee and builds upon the work the Committee has conducted in prior years. For this year, which runs commensurate to the academic year, the Committee has identified at least five projects.

The MWL Conference for Women in the Law: What you Can Do for Yourself and for Your Colleagues

By: Lisa Lodin Peralta

hover textI recently attended MWL’s Committee Fair and Summer Social. As a co-chair of the 2018 Conference for Women in the Law, my role was to encourage MWL members to get involved in our committee.  Participating in the committee fair from the back side of the table allowed me to reflect on how I arrived there in a pretty short period of time.

As a relatively new member of MWL in 2016, I regularly read the “MWL Happenings” emails to look for ways to get involved in the organization. Last fall a request for CLE proposals for the 2017 annual conference caught my eye. I had never attended MWL’s annual Conference for Women in the Law, but I was a regular CLE presenter and immediately decided I would at least submit a proposal...

MWL Member Spotlight: Angela Brandt

hover text1. When and why did you join Minnesota Women Lawyers (MWL)?

I joined MWL as a first year associate so I could make connections with other women lawyers in Minnesota and hopefully figure out how the profession worked!

2. When and why did you join the National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL)?

I joined NAWL in 2004. Initially, I was looking for ways to expand my network on a national level. While that is still true, I became more active in NAWL so I can help make positive changes in the profession for women.

3. Describe your professional background and your current position?

After graduating from Hamline Law School, I worked as a litigation associate at Rider Bennett for three years. I then went in-house for Farmers Insurance Company. I joined Larson King in 2004 and am now an equity partner litigating products liability, employment, and commercial matters.
