From the President

By being part of the MWL community, I have learned what a critical impact pro bono work and volunteering can make in our local legal community. The articles in this issue provide a small sampling of the many different ways MWL members get involved in various kinds of community building and volunteer work, both inside and outside MWL.

MWL Member Spotlight: Libby Stennes

hover text1. Describe your professional background and your current employment position?

I started my legal practice in Washington, D.C., where I joined a global law firm after a clerkship at the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. I was among one of the youngest woman elected as an equity partner at that firm. When my family moved to Minnesota, where the firm had no office, I practiced remotely for a decade. In August 2019, I joined the recently-opened Minneapolis office of Greenberg Traurig as a Shareholder in the litigation group.

Engaging the Greater Good:
How to Implement Community Service Projects for Lawyers and Law Firms

By: SooJin Pate

hover textFor many attorneys haunted by the ever-looming billable hour requirement, taking time to volunteer and engage in community service activities might be the last thing they are thinking about. But research has proven that participating in projects that are “bigger than yourself” promotes well-being and increases your sense of happiness. “Our lives are ‘fuller’ when we let go of our time, money, and energy for people and causes outside ourselves,” explains public policy expert Ryan Streeter in his article “What Motivates People to Participate in Civil Society.”

The Pro Se Project: Narrowing the Justice Gap in Federal Court for Underrepresented Civil Litigants

By: Tiffany Sanders

Pro se litigants squarely test our notion of justice, particularly when they are up against represented parties.  Judges cannot render legal advice, attorneys for the represented party have a fiduciary obligation to their client, and civil procedure is often opaque to the lay person. Yet every day, the underserved of our community – who are typically ill-equipped to appear on their own – bring their most important issues into our courts, seeking justice pro se.

Finding Your Own Path Through Community Service

By: Ignacio A. Sanz Perez

hover textAt first, I came to the United States solely to study, but I was inspired to stay by the stunning community service being done in the Twin Cities, Minnesota. Three years ago, like many other law students, I had no clue what I wanted to do with my legal career. Most likely that uncertainty brought me to the United States in the first place. It was 2016 and I had just become a licensed attorney; yet I did not have an answer as to what to do. My law studies were largely theoretical and isolated from the current needs of the community. While I was fortunate to engage in some valuable projects during my years as a law student, it was insufficient to find my path. Going abroad was a way to find that answer.

The Journey That Brought Me to Minnesota and the Power of Community

By: Zuzana Menzlova

My hands turned cold and my heartbeat spiked. I was looking at the J1 visiting scholar visa neatly glued into my passport. In that moment, my departure to United State turned from dream to reality. Yet, fear overwhelmed me. Was I ready to give up my comfortable Vienna for something new and unknown? Until that visa arrived, studying U.S. law was an interesting option. In that moment, it became a decision point of life.

MWL Inspires the Next Generation of Women Lawyers

By: Angie Streit

If you were in the Girl Scouts a long enough time ago, your scouting memories may be full of pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks, and lots of hot glue guns. Mine are.  (And did anyone else’s troop have makeover and “new hairdo” sessions like mine did?) I’m not saying that the Girl Scouts of today can’t rock some serious craft time, but scouting today seems to be so much more than it sometimes was in the past.  One way the local Girl Scouts River Valleys prepares its scouts to be empowered and confident leaders of tomorrow is through MWL’s Girl Scout Law Day.

Did you know that, in addition to the MWL mother ship,” you have a local MWL chapter hungry for your involvement? I am a member of the St. Croix Valley Chapter, which automatically includes those from the general MWL roster who either work or live as north as Marine on the St. Croix, down to Afton, and west toward Woodbury.
