Did you know that, in addition to the MWL mother ship, you have a local MWL chapter hungry for your involvement? I am a member of the St. Croix Valley Chapter, which automatically includes those from the general MWL roster who either work or live as north as Marine on the St. Croix, down to Afton, and west toward Woodbury.

Each year we have four regular meetings (read: wine and cheese parties) to plan ways in which we can positively affect our community. For example, we regularly organize a spring CLE to improve community engagement, and a winter coat-and-hat drive to support families without adequate protection. Donors bring their gently used items to our places of business or we make trips to collect the items ourselves. Then we bring the items to Valley Outreach where they can be sorted and delivered to those in need.

This year, in addition to our winter coat-and-hat drive, we are taking on a new initiative to support students at Oak-Land Middle School who cannot afford school supplies or fees associated with field trips. We also plan to be involved in the school's efforts to empower young girls through their STEM program and (hopefully) to speak with students about careers in the law this January. Our chapter president Angela Heart dearly supports “[f]undraising initiatives like this, where we get to give back to the community — both financially and in kind — these are the kinds of projects that give life to our organization.

Because our community supports two middle schools, next year we plan to turn our attention to Stillwater Middle School.

If you live or work in the St. Croix Valley, come check us out. We'll bring the wine!
