MWL Announces 2014 Annual Award and Law Student Scholarship Recipients

Minnesota Women Lawyers is pleased to present its 2014 Annual Awards at its 42nd Annual Meeting on May 19th, 2014.

Leadership Award
Minnesota Women Lawyers established its Leadership Award to recognize legal employers throughout the state that strive to enhance the status, influence and effectiveness of women lawyers in their employ.

The 2014 Leadership Award will be presented to Wilson Law Group

From the Award Nomination: “Wilson Law Group has been developing innovative ways to promote women in the legal profession and to facilitate a healthy work life balance for all staff members since the firm’s inception [in 2003]…Women are recruited and hired at all levels at WLG. WLG currently has twelve attorneys, of which ten are women…Women occupy the majority of the leadership roles within the firm…Currently four of the five senior-level positions are occupied by women…WLG has a strong track record in its retention of female employees. Six of the ten female attorneys currently employed at WLG have been at the firm for at least three years…WLG supports the professional development of its female staf in both formal and informal ways… Mentoring of associate attorneys and other staff occurs on a daily basis at WLG as a result of the collaborative, team-based approach and a firm wide “open door policy. As the firm grows, so does its commitment to enhance the status, influence and effectiveness of women lawyers.”

Service to MWL Award
The Service to MWL Award was created to recognize the MWL member, group of members, Partner or 100% club member whose efforts have contributed substantially to advance MWL's mission.

The 2014 Service to MWL Award will be presented to Amy Taber, Partner at Barnes & Thornburg LLP

Amy Taber has been an MWL leader since 2009, when she first served as co-chair to MWL’s Research Taskforce. She played an integral role in developing MWL’s Research Committee and served as co-chair from 2011-2012, where she helped spearhead the MWL Compendium. In 2012, Amy joined MWL’s Board of Directors where she continues to serve. Amy has also served as a volunteer mentor in MWL’s Student to Attorney Mentor Program for the last three years. Furthermore, Amy has consistently and enthusiastically supported MWL by serving on panels, writing articles for MWL’s quarterly journal, With Equal Right, regularly attending MWL events and meetings, and serving as an MWL ambassador to the broader legal community. Amy’s tireless efforts on behalf of MWL over the past years have greatly contributed to advance MWL’s mission.

Myra Bradwell Award
Presented to an MWL member who expresses the highest ideals of the legal profession and who possesses the qualities exemplified by Myra Bradwell such as courage, perseverance, and leadership on issues of concern to women.

The 2014 Myra Bradwell Award will be presented to Cheryl Thomas, The Advocates for Human Rights

From the Award Nomination: “Cheryl Thomas is an attorney and Director of the Women's Human Rights Program, a program she founded at The Advocates for Human Rights…For twelve years she [has] implemented the program’s mission focusing on research, advocacy, and education in the promotion of women’s human rights around the world. Because of her groundbreaking and important work, Cheryl was named as Newsweek Magazine’s 150 “Women Who Shake the World” in March 2011. She was also named Minnesota Women’s Press, “Changemaker of the Year,” in 2005…The significance of Cheryl’s work on behalf of women, to advance the laws protecting women and to raising awareness of domestic violence cannot be overstated. She has undoubtedly saved women’s lives and improved the conditions under which they live…With her unparalleled passion and commitment to women’s human rights, she has made an indelible mark on The Advocates and the international human rights movement.”

Equal Justice Award
All Minnesota law school students are invited to submit papers or articles they have written on a topic involving law and social justice. Submissions are judges on the following five criteria: Significance, Originality, Presentation, Persuasiveness and Impact.

The 2014 Equal Justice Award will be presented to Brittany Mitchell, a second-year law student at the University of Minnesota Law School. Brittany’s article is entitled: Expanding the Integration Mandate to Employment: The Push to Apply the Principles of the ADA and Olmstead Decision to Disability Employment Services.

The 2014 Equal Justice Award “Honorable Mention” will be presented to Nic Puechner, a second-year law student at William Mitchell College of Law. Nic’s article is entitled: No Clean Slates: Unpacking the Complications of Juvenile Expungements in the Wake of J.J.P.¬—In Re Welfare of J.J.P.

Law Student Scholarship
All Minnesota law students are invited to apply for MWL’s Law Student Scholarship. The goal of the scholarship is to provide aid to students attending a Minnesota law school who demonstrate an interest in furthering the mission of Minnesota Women Lawyers, "To advance the success of women in the legal profession and strive for a just society.”

The 2014 recipients of MWL Law Student Scholarship are:
Joanna Dobson, a first-year student at the University of Minnesota Law School
Gabriela Linder, a third-year student at the University of St. Thomas School of Law
