MWL Gender Data Project Receives the 2020 NCWBA Public Service Award

The National Conference of Women Bar Associations recently announced that Minnesota Women Lawyers’ Gender Data Project has been named the recipient of the 2020 NCWBA Public Service Award. The National Conference of Women’s Bar Associations recognizes significant accomplishments of member associations in the hopes of inspiring others to replicate or create similar programs, as well as to honor the good work of volunteers.

The 2020 NCWBA Public Service Award will be presented at the Women’s Bar Leadership Summit in Chicago on Friday, July 31, 2020.

“MWL is honored to be recognized with this significant national award,” states MWL President Amy Taber. “The Gender Data Project has been a pillar of MWL’s work for nearly ten years, thanks to so many MWL members and legal community organizations who have collaborated with us to work towards the initiative’s goals.  In particular, MWL is grateful to the many leaders and volunteers whose dedication made this decade-long effort possible.  MWL has also been honored to partner with affinity bars and the greater legal community in advocating for collection of this important demographic data.  MWL further recognizes the Minnesota Supreme Court for its continuing collection and reporting of both gender and race/ethnicity demographic data as a part of its Annual Report of the Minnesota Judicial Branch.  We look forward to our continuing efforts to collaborate with our legal community on this important initiative.”

ABOUT THE MWL GENDER DATA PROJECT
Through comprehensive data collection, analysis and advocacy for nearly a decade, the MWL Gender Data Project has focused on a multitude of initiatives to clarify and better understand the number and status of women attorneys in Minnesota.  In looking forward, MWL will continue this important work, given that comprehensive and long-term data collection and analysis will be a vital component of efforts towards equity in the Minnesota legal profession.

ABOUT THE NCWBA PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD
Initiated in 1985, the NCWBA Public Service Award is given to bar associations to recognize a wide variety of outstanding and unique public service projects. The types of projects which have won the Public Service Award over the years have taken many different forms and have approached “public service” in a variety of different ways.

The very first NCWBA Public Service Award was presented to the Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles and the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles in 1985 by US Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, as part of a “Women in Law” reception at the US Supreme Court.
