MWL Announces FY20-21 Board Nomination Process

MWL President Amy Taber recently appointed members to the FY20-21 MWL Nominating Committee.  The Nominating Committee is charged with recommending a slate of candidates to the Minnesota Women Lawyers membership for the FY20-21 MWL Board of Directors. The election will be held at MWL’s 48th Annual Meeting on Friday, April 24th, 12:00 noon at the Marriott City Center in downtown Minneapolis. Terms commence on July 1, 2020.

 

Completed nominations for the FY20-21 MWL Board of Directors must be received in the MWL office by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, February 28th, 2020


Members of the Nominating Committee include:

  • Shannon Harmon (Chair), IRS Office of the Chief Counsel (St. Paul)
  • Ronda Bayer, Liberty Diversified International (New Hope)
  • Kay Biga, Spott Law Office (Duluth)
  • Emerald Gratz, Minnesota Supreme Court (St. Paul)
  • Veena Iyer, Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota (St. Paul)
  • Ji Hae Kim, Target Corporation (Minneapolis)
  • Breia Schleuss, Faegre Baker Daniels (Minneapolis)

 

OPEN BOARD POSITIONS
Nominations are being sought for five (5) Board of Director positions; each are two-year terms. Nominations are also being sought for the positions of President-Elect, Secretary and Treasurer, each are one-year terms. Board position descriptions are available HERE.  Candidates for President-Elect, Secretary and Treasurer may not be members of the Nominating Committee.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

As per the MWL Bylaws, Article V: Nominating Committee, Section 3: Qualifications: All nominated individuals shall be current members in good standing of [Minnesota Women Lawyers], and shall meet any other qualifications as reasonably determined by the Board of Directors. 

 

As Approved by the MWL Board of Directors on June 28, 2018:  Applicants for MWL Board positions must have been a member for at least two years, with at least one year of active MWL involvement. Candidates who do not meet the minimum requirement(s) are encouraged to become involved with MWL, given its many other leadership opportunities, and pursue Board service in the future. GENERAL STANDARDS FOR CONSIDERATION
MWL has established general standards to be considered by MWL's Nominating Committee in recommending a slate of candidates for the FY20-21 MWL Board of Directors. Considerations may include, but are not limited to:

 

• A candidate's past experience serving on the board of Minnesota Women Lawyers or other organizations;
• A candidate's passion for MWL and past involvement with MWL;
• A candidate's past involvement with other legal and community organizations;
• A candidate's overall career experience, within and outside of the legal community, as it may relate to areas of expertise needed on the board (financial, marketing, banking, business, etc.);
• A candidate's other skills, talents and connections that would be useful for MWL;
• A candidate's ability to commit an appropriate amount of time to the specific board position being applied for;
• A candidate's impact on the overall diversity of the board's make-up, in conjunction with (or) as described in MWL's Diversity and Inclusion Statement;
• A candidate's commitment, conscientiousness and sense of responsibility for tasks; and

• A candidate's leadership ability and willingness to use it on behalf of MWL.

 

MWL PREMIER MEMBERSHIP
Beginning with FY18-19, Board members are expected to support MWL at one of its Premier Member membership levels. A leader's Premier membership serves as a strong message of MWL support.  However, the intent of this expectation is not meant to inhibit or prevent a members' ability to serve in a leadership capacity. CANDIDATE INTERVIEWS 
The MWL Nominating Committee will conduct brief (15 minute) interviews with all nominees. Interviews will be held on Thursday, March 19th, 2020 between 12:00 noon and 5:00 p.m. at the MWL office (600 Nicollet Mall, Suite 390B in Minneapolis) or by other means as coordinated with the MWL Executive Director.  (Video conference and teleconference will be available to ensure each candidate's access to the interview process.)

 

A candidate interview time will be scheduled on a first come basis as soon as a Board nomination has been received by MWL.  Early Board nomination submission is strongly encouraged, in order to best coordinate interview times. 

 

APPLICATION PROCESS
MWL members interested in serving on the MWL Board of Directors, or those who would like to nominate another MWL member, should submit a complete nomination to the MWL office (dpexa@mwlawyers.org or via regular mail to 600 Nicollet Mall, Suite 390B, Minneapolis, MN 55402).  

 

Submissions must include:

 

1) FY20-21 MWL Board of Directors Nomination Cover Sheet 

2) Letter of Interest or Letter of Nomination

3) Candidate's Resume. 

 

NOTE: Most nominations submitted to MWL are self-nominations.

 

Completed nominations must be received in the MWL office by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, February 28th, 2020

 

The FY20-21 MWL Board of Directors slate of candidates will be announced on the MWL website at www.mwlawyers.org and in the Spring 2020 issue of With Equal Right.
